Martin Catterall Head Shot

Managing Director of LMC Solutions, Martin Catterall is a highly experienced strategist, leader and business manager.

An old boy of Otago Boys High School, Catterall graduated from Otago University with a Science degree and Post graduate Diploma in Georgraphy, with a major in Computer Science. Catterall started his career in New Zealand at the Department of Labour as a Systems Planner and over four years worked his way up to Database Manager. This foundation prepared him well for a series of contract opportunities with the National Library, BP Oil NZ and New Zealand Post.

In April ’92 Catterall was head hunted out of NZ by Dairy Farm International in Hong Kong first as a Database Consultant and then as their Technical Services Manager. In July ’95 an opportunity arose for Catterall to further expand his skill set in a role with a subsidiary of the company, Nestlé, as an Application Design Consultant. In 1996, at the completion of the contract, Catterall left Hong Kong for Sydney Australia where he took up a position with Corporate Express, first as their Manager of Projects and then as their Application Development Manager.

Toward the end of ’97, Catterall was offered the role of Asia Pacific Y2K Project Manager for Kellogg Pty, Ltd. The opportunity to work back in Asia was a huge incentive for Catterall and he expanded his understanding of cultural diversity and international business practice on the run-up to the Year 2000.  When the project came to an end early in 2000, Catterall was invited to take up the position of Applications Services Manager for Kellogg in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. When Kellogg closed down a huge part of their Asia operations in 2001, Catterall accepted a contract in Singapore with Cold Storage, a subsidiary of his old company Dairy Farm International, as the Project Manager for their ERP Implementation. A year later, Catterall was back in Malaysia on contract to BHP Steel Asia as a Business Process Consultant.

Catterall moved into the Executive function when he was appointed the Senior Director, IT for Vsource Malaysia, the privately owned technology outsourcing arm of Vsource Inc. This initial step away from the coal face to deal with more strategic concerns provided Catterall with exposure to issues facing IT in a range of difference business operations. When he took up the position of ITT Director with the World Health Organization in Geneva in April 2004, he was well prepared to take on a department that had been left largely to its own devices for several years. Nearly 10 years later, he had successfully re-positioned the ICT function from “break-fix” to a key partner in the functioning of the organization and saved the WHO USD17 million over a biennium through restructuring the department to improve focus, reprioritizing the ICT function and expansion of the IT support team in Kuala Lumpur.

When the opportunity arose to take up a CIO role with St John in Auckland, Catterall saw a way forward to return to New Zealand and continue his work enabling ICT to provide key support to a primary healthcare provider. Over the 15 months he held the role, Catterall identified a number of critical ICT corporate risks, promoted their remediation, obtained funding and capacity to resolve them. He implemented new technologies, created a new structural design and changed the staff culture to become end-user focused and supportive of staff irrespective of location.

A member of the Directors’ Institute of New Zealand, Catterall is Prince2 and ITIL qualified and featured in CIO Magazine in September 2014.
